This Mackerel brooch is made by hand in my workshop in St Austell, Cornwall. The background is pierced from embossed copper, allowing the natural warmth of the metal and its developing patina to come through. Surrounding the centre is a brass etched frame, inspired by the the decorative edges of classic Spode chargers - My studio in Stoke was in the former Spode pottery factory!
At the heart of the piece, two nickel silver mackerel are opposite each another, stamped with simple details to bring out their shape and markings. Mackerel are a familiar sight along the Cornish coast, and their distinctive contrast and movement translate well into metal.
The combination of metals — copper, brass and nickel silver — gives the brooch a layered, tactile quality. The patina settles gradually, shaped by the making process and the environment, leaving every brooch with its own surface character.
A handcrafted brass pin is fitted to the reverse, made to be secure and steady when worn. This is a unique piece of wearable art with a slightly sculptural feel.
